GOLCONDE - By Various Authors

Built as a dormitory for disciples of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Golconde is a unique, naturally cooled structure which was designed by a team of architects, Antonin Raymond, François Sammers, and George Nakashima. This book traces the history, design, and construction of the building from 1936 to 1948. Photographs, sketches, and detailed plans help to highlight some of its special architectural features, such as the operable, horizontal louvres which cover the entire wall surface and give the building its distinctive façade. A landmark in architecture, Golconde has been called "the finest example of modern functional architecture built in India in the pre-independence period".
